SISD unveils "School House" program

With over 15 years of experience in a variety of Texas Independent School Districts, Sylvia Atkinson is an administrative professional who has consistently proven her dedication to community. Sylvia Atkinson has earned praise for her ability to engage community members, school district officials, and business leaders in an effort to improve community values and help give children the opportunities they need to succeed. During her time as Superintendent of Schools of the Los Fresnos Independent School District, Sylvia Atkinson created the district’s first technology academy with corresponding television studio. This innovative project allowed Los Fresnos students the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and creativity, while simultaneously supporting and publicizing district and community activities.

During the three years that Sylvia Atkinson spent as the Superintendent of Schools in Los Fresnos, Texas, she created a number of district-wide committees credited with revitalizing and renewing the relationship between community and school board through the facilitation of communication. Such committees as the Parent Advisory Committee and the Teacher Advisory Committee, along with several key focus groups, helped seemingly disparate groups within the community unite to improve standards of education in the Los Fresnos school district.

In addition to her time at Los Fresnos, Sylvia Atkinson has served as Executive Director for Human Resources in the Eagle Pass Independent School District. This experience in Human Resources helped Ms. Atkinson develop her administrative abilities, as well as hone her ability to meet personnel needs, and her accomplishments in this position have held long-term benefits for the residents of Eagle Pass. Sylvia Atkinson coordinated the Public Relations Department of the Eagle Pass Independent School District, where she held the responsibility of making sure that relevant information was disseminated to the proper recipients. This information dissemination helped keep the Eagle Pass community abreast of the happenings of the school district, increasing transparency between educators and the families of the children educated. During her time at Eagle Pass, Sylvia Atkinson further demonstrated her commitment to service and community by Chairing the Champion for Children Golf Tournament, credited with fundraising tens of thousands of dollars for the benefit of the 2001 and 2002 graduates of the Eagle Pass School District.
